Patrick’s Review

I have been using a Miken Ultra 2 Red Maxload playing recreationally with my Dad for the past two years.  We have Home Run Derby’s between the two of us at different fields here in the islands.  We use 12” X-Rock Balls, and shoot for the fences.   I mostly use the 34/30 Ultra 2 Maxload, and my dad uses a 34/28 Ultra 2 Maxload.

Besides for maybe an original Miken Ultra 1 Gray(which isn’t made anymore), the Ultra 2 is the best overall bat I have ever used.  It has great pop off the sweet spot.  With the Maxload’s extra weight at the end of the barrel, you can definitely feel the bat come through with more velocity as you snap your wrists and because of this I think it is important for the batter to have strong hands and wrists to take full advantage of the weighted cap.  This sometimes feels as though you are clubbing the ball.  I hit home runs anywhere from 300-400 feet with this bat.

The main characteristic I would give this bat is that it’s incredibly solid.  The grip is nice, but with significant use it definitely wears down, and if you have opposite handed batters using the bat, I have actually seen the grip become unraveled.  Overall, I love the Miken Ultra 2 Maxload and would recommend it to people looking for power, but more importantly an overall solid bat.  Be sure to check out the sequence shots below, as well as video of the Miken Ultra 2 Red Maxload in action.

Dennis’ Review

The Miken Ultra 2 Maxload is my favorite bat. I have been using the Ultra 2 Maxload for about three years now, and it is by far the best overall bat for power and pop off of the bat. Besides for being my favorite bat, I also think that the Red Ultra is the most popular among competitive Senior Softball Leagues throughout the country. Last Fall I attended Huntsman Games in St. George, Utah. The majority of people there were swinging the Ultra 2 Maxload.

I play softball 4-5 days a week so my bats see a lot of action. I have noticed that after heavy, heavy use, the composite construction of the bat tends to start to crack. I am still a big fan of the bat, regardless of any wear issues I have encountered.

The power off this bat is great. I can hit balls 10-20 feet further than a non-maxload Miken Ultra 2 Black. The weight at the end of the bat helps with arm and wrist extension to help aid in bat speed and power. The feel of the bat is smooth, but you can definitely feel the weighted end snapping your wrists through the plate. I love my Ultra 2 Maxload, and I would recommend it to anyone looking for a great all round bat with exceptional power.

The legend/myth of the Ultra has in my opinion has given it a reputation that I don’t think it can live up tp.  Everyone says this bat will hit balls further than any other, but I find it to be right in line with a Miken Ultra 2 Maxload.  Obviously, the ball explodes off the bat with great speed and power.  I have definitely hit some of my furthest home runs with the Ultra Original, just not all of them.
The Miken Ultra original has a Maxloaded end, which definitely helps with bat speed, while allowing your wrists to snap and strike the ball.  Overall, a great bat, but a little too expensive for 99% of people.

Dennis’ Review

This Miken Ultra original is a bit of a legend.  If you search the internet you will find information about how the original Ultra is basically a rocket launcher attached to a bat.  People say that this bat hits further than any other Slowpitch Softball Bat.  So far that is was basically discontinued from production and banned from leagues across the country.  The only place to find an Miken Ultra Original these days is on Ebay.  Average Price: $300-$600 depending on condition.  In my never ending quest to hit the ball further, I decided to see what the fuss was about.  I found an Ultra 1 last year on ebay, and have been blasting balls with it since.
The Miken Ultra Original has a great power and pop off the bat.  The ball explodes off bat.  You can hit it further with noticeably more power.  Like the other Ultra Series bats, hitting feels solid, like a rock, with no dull/dud feel.  The grip is wearing a little bit, possibly due to it being an older bat, but nothing too bad.  Great great bat, but hard to find and it costs a small fortune.

Patrick’s Review

The Miken Freak Plus is loved by a lot of softball players, but it is not one of my favorites.  I really like the feel of my swing with it; it has nice balance and bat speed.  I’m just not a big fan of how it hits.  It has decent pop off the bat, but it doesn’t feel nearly as solid as the Ultra Series.  I was able to create good bat speed, but it just didn’t seem to explode off the bat like others I’ve used.  It just doesn’t feel like you are truly connecting with the ball.  I felt like I was hitting it 20-30 feet shorter with the Freak.
The Freak has a nice sweet spot and an extra long barrel for added performance, but in my opinion is not the best for Home Run hitting with what else is available.  I would recommend it to anyone who isn’t looking to hit a home run every time up to the plate, but an all-around good bat that has good control and solid performance.    Be sure to check out the pictures and video of the Miken Freak Plus in action.

Dennis’ Review

The Miken Freak Plus is one of Miken’s more popular bats. Like a lot of the Miken bats, it had a 100% composite construction, which allows the bat to deliver maximum performance and power, while still having great feel.

It has a nice, smooth balanced swing and decent pop off the bat. I wouldn’t say the ball explodes like it would off an Ultra 2, but still better than most. I know people who swear by this bat that it is the most powerful, but I think the Ultra’s still take the crown on distance hitting. Nevertheless, still a great bat.
